So a deep cleaning essentially is the location and the condition of the gums. In order for us to know what you have, we have to do x-rays, perform some probing, which are measurements of the gums, and if there’s any probings, meaning the distance between your gum tissue and your bone, that level should be between one and three millimeters. If it’s more than three millimeters, meaning four, five, and so on, then we know we can diagnose you with periodontal disease.
If a patient is nervous, we try to get them numb so they’re comfortable. There’s several ways we can do that. Topical gel, just to kind of numb up the gums.
We can do a little something called Ora-Kix that kind of goes a little bit underneath the gums, but not as an actual injection. And then for the majority of cases, to make sure that they really don’t feel anything, we do a localized anesthetic. And the anesthetic we use, we typically try to use one that does not have the epinephrine.
That way, it’s not as invasive and it doesn’t last as long, but however, it doesn’t give you the heart palpitations or the fluctuating heart rate or even increase your blood pressure. For the deep cleaning, we’re able to go underneath the gums, remove the bacteria that’s causing the inflammation and the bone loss with a Calvitron, with hand scalers, and then we polish and floss and make sure that all that bacteria has been removed. And we see them back in about 21 days to see if that bacteria indeed has eliminated that area and then we get what’s called tissue attachment.
And that tissue attachment allows us to know that those pockets that might have been four, five, six, or so on are now back to twos and threes, which is a normal condition.

Putting off dental appointments until you are in pain can lead to a serious oral health issue. Plus, not all dental problems show painful symptoms until they are in the advanced stages. Regular dental check-ups give you the advantage of having a dental professional examine your mouth. Detecting oral health concerns in their early stages means less expensive and less invasive treatments.
To keep your teeth and gums in the best possible shape, we recommend visiting our office every six months for dental cleanings and exams. This allows our team to remove bacteria-filled plaque before it can cause any serious problems. It also enables us to find issues like cavities and gum disease in their earliest stages, when they are easiest to treat.
