I love laser dentistry. I have owned lasers since the conception of my practice. We have used laser dentistry effectively, not only to have the patient be less afraid of procedures, but we find that when we do periodontal treatments and we use lasers to decontaminate the gums, the gums are healed the next day.
That helps the patient not only with reduction of pain, but with inflammation, but also with the need of taking antibiotics for 21 days. So the benefits of laser dentistry is not like it’s less painful, it’s less invasive, and less inflammatory, but the healing process is so fast that the patient actually doesn’t have to be taking as many antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, so it reduces the amount of medication somebody needs, and it’s a really great experience because it’s so gentle. You know, we have lasers that are so precise, you know, it’s like a pin.
Some lasers that I have seen patients come with, that they have, say, a type of laser that’s very aggressive and very ordinary that burns the tissues, and then the patient takes, you see the gums a year after, and it looks like a murder scene. The lasers that we use here are lasers that are so gentle and precise that you don’t have to damage the other tissues around it. So patients actually, they come the next day and the tissues are healed.
We also use laser dentistry to detect the depth of decay. It’s called a K-bomb, and we also use laser to do the actual extractions. There are settings on the laser that are for, you know, separation of the gums and cutting it like a scalpel, like an electrical scalpel with a light.
We have a water lace that the water cuts the gum. Imagine that. It’s very, very clean, and then the laser not only decontaminates cuts, but actually can separate the ligament of the tooth and the bone, so the tooth actually pops out of the socket.
Instead of having this forceful, you know, chisel and hammer, old-style dentistry that I have seen and have received as a dentist in horror because I have equipment that my patients don’t have to go through that.
